Poll: Majority Of Hispanics Lean To Democratic Party
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Republican Party put together a post-election report that looked to identify problems that cost them the presidency. Chief among the problems was a lack of minority outreach and that's being found in polling from other groups as well.
According to a new Gallup poll, 57 percent of Hispanic immigrants born outside the United States said they identify with or lean to the Democratic Party. A quarter said they lean towards the GOP. The numbers were nearly identical (57-34) with Hispanics born in the U.S. with one or both parents born outside the country.
For those Hispanics born in the United States with both parents inside the United States, 64 percent identified with Democrats or lean Democratic while 30 percent lean Republican.
Overall in the Gallup poll, 51 percent of Hispanics surveyed were born outside the United States while 29 percent were born in the U.S. with both parents born in the United States. The survey had 20 percent of respondents born in the U.S. and one or both parents born outside the United States.
"This significant Democratic advantage among Hispanics, regardless of whether they are U.S.-born or immigrants, suggests that simply waiting for Hispanics to assimilate will not be a successful strategy for Republicans hoping to capture a greater percentage of the Hispanic vote," Gallup said of its results.
