Poll: Mack Dominating GOP Field, Tied With Nelson
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – As U.S. Senator Bill Nelson continues to pull in more money for his general campaign, it's looking more and more like his Republican opponent will likely be Representative Connie Mack IV.
According to the latest Quinnipiac University poll, Representative Mack leads former Senator George LeMieux and Mike McCallister by 33 and 32 points respectively. Mack received 40 percent of the support among registered Republicans to LeMieux's 7 percent and McCallister's 8 percent.
Still, there's plenty of room for each candidate to move up and down ahead of August's primary. Forty-one percent of registered Republicans said they were not sure which candidate they were going to support.
But Senator Nelson can't get comfortable either. The poll found Nelson is currently trailing Mack by a 42-41 percent margin, which was inside the margin of error for the poll, making it a statistical dead heat.
Nelson trailed among male voters by eight percent and among white voters by 13 percent to Mack. Nelson also trailed Mack among Hispanic voters by an eight percent margin. But, a plurality of voters said they approved of Nelson's handling of job as Senator.
Half of all Republican voters said they haven't heard enough about Mack to have an opinion of him.
The same poll found that Governor Rick Scott had negative numbers among voters, but his numbers have improved since January. Forty-six percent disapprove of Scott's job performance while 41 percent approve.
