Poll: Floridians Favor Stricter Gun Control Laws
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – While Republicans in the House of Representatives and the Senate are stonewalling gun control reform, a majority of Floridian voters want stricter gun laws, according to the latest Quinnipiac University poll.
According to the Q-poll, by a margin of 51-44 percent, Florida voters want stricter gun laws. This comes despite gun owners opposing the idea by a 66-33 percent margin.
The Q-poll found that by a 56-41 percent margin voters supported a nationwide ban on the sale of assault weapons. Florida voters also supported a nationwide ban on high-capacity magazines holding more than 10 rounds by a 53-43 percent margin.
Nearly 60 percent of voters said schools should have armed police officers walking the halls, but 57 percent said gun ownership in Florida does more to protect people from crime than to put them at risk.
Finally, Florida voters by a 91-8 percent margin agreed with the idea of mandatory background checks to buy a gun anywhere.
The U.S. Senate, controlled by Democrats, is planning on voting on a gun control bill soon. However, due to pressure from the GOP and the National Rifle Association, no assault weapon ban or magazine limit is expected to be in the bill, and its possible the background check loophole for gun shows will be allowed to continue.
