Poll: Domestic Issues Reign Supreme Ahead Of State Of The Union Address
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – President Barack Obama is set to deliver arguably the most important State of the Union address of his presidency Tuesday night as he seeks to frame the 2012 presidential election on his terms.
President Obama's biggest challenge will be to get the economy on track, a fact backed up by the latest survey from the Pew Research Center.
According to the Pew poll, 86 percent of those surveyed said strengthening the economy and working on jobs should be the top priority of both President Obama and Congress.
No other issue polled was rated as a priority by at least 70 percent of Americans.
For Obama, he will have to walk a tightrope of trying to convince the American people to give him another four years, while also taking the hits for having to preside over an economy recovering from the worst recession since the Great Depression in the 1930's.
On the Republican front, perhaps sensing that President Obama has taken the lead on foreign policy and terrorism; more Republicnas are concerned with the deficit rather than terrorism.
Since 2007, Pew found that Republicans focused on the deficit doubled to 84 percent, while GOP focus on terrorism dropped from 93 percent in 2007 to 72 percent currently,.
When it comes to an issue that President Obama and Democrats will focus on, tax fairness; it remains a low priority amongst Republicans.
But, it still rates more critical amongst Democrats and independents, who will as always decide the eventual President.
