Poll: 62% Have Unfavorable View Of GOP After Shutdown
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – As the GOP-led government shutdown continues in its second week, new poll numbers from Gallup showed that the shutdown taking a big toll on the Republican Party in the eyes of voters.
According to Gallup, the Republican Party is now viewed favorably by just 28 percent of American voters. The number represents a ten percent drop from the same time in November and is the lowest favorable rating measured for either party since 1992.
While things are bad for the Republican Party, Democrats are not doing much better. The same Gallup poll found just 43 percent view the Democratic Party favorably. However, the Democratic numbers have dropped just four percent from the same time in September.
Sixty-two percent of Americans now have an unfavorable view of the GOP while 49 percent view Democrats unfavorably. Further, self-identified Republicans are twice as likely to see their party unfavorably as Democrats are to see their own party unfavorably.
The GOP's unfavorable view of its own party has jumped eight points since September compared to a one point rise for Democrats.
Finally, Gallup found independents dislike both parties with 32 percent viewing the Democratic Party favorably and 27 percent viewing the GOP favorably.
