Suspect In West Dade Restaurant Shooting Surrenders To Police
WEST MIAMI-DADE (CBSMiami) – The man police blame for a shooting that left one man dead and another recovering in the hospital surrendered to police Monday afternoon, a short time after they asked for the public's help finding him.
53-year-old Angel Torres faces charges of murder and attempted murder, after he was allegedly involved in a fight with 2 other men Sunday morning at the La Cueva USA Café on Bird Road in West Miami-Dade.
Miami-Dade police spokesperson Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said 39-year-old Cesar Villanueva and another man, whom police have yet to identify, were outside the restaurant when they had words with Torres.
The war of words escalated into action, when Zabaleta said Torres allegedly took a gun and shot repeatedly at the two men, hitting both of them.
Gladis Londono works at the cafe, and told CBS4's Natalia Zea she ran from the bullets.
"To save my life, that's all I was thinking," said Londono.
Londono insists the men involved in this double shooting were not customers of La Cueva.
"A man who we don't know came here and started shooting. He shot a young man who was outside, he shot the glass, he shot inside," she said.
He fled, and people in the area called for help. Both men were taken to Ryder Trauma Center, according to Zabaleta, where Villanueva was listed in critical condition.
The second man, identified only as a 29-year-old caucasian, died of his injuries. Police have declined to release his name as they attempt to notify his relatives.
The owners and employees of the beauty salon right next door to La Cueva say this kind of tragedy was bound to happen here.
"There was always women prostituting themselves. We would see women leave with guys, we would see drunk men just laying down on that grass all the time," said Michelle Galvez, the salon owner's daughter.
