Video Captures Wanna-Be Jewel Thieves In Action

DAVIE (CBS4) – The Davie Police Department is asking for the public's help in finding a couple of wanna-be jewel thieves who tried to smash their way into a jewelry store but left empty handed and injured.

The attempted burglary took place Tuesday, September 20th, at the Wise Guys Jewelry and Loan located at 4298 S. University Drive around 10:40 p.m.

Surveillance video from inside and outside of the store shows both suspects very clearly.

One man could be seen walking by the store and a second man was seen throwing a cinder block through the front of the glass store window. With only a small hole in the glass, the man reached inside and grabbed a 115 pound granite ball that was part of a fixture and pulled it through the hole in the window and took off.

Store owner Matt Petruccelli was glad his security system help stop the criminals in action.

"We are very happy that they didn't get in, they didn't steal anything. We do consignments so everybody's valuables are safe. Outside of the inconvenience of the problem we are happy that the system worked and we didn't spare any expense on it," said Petruccelli.

Petrucelli said he paid more than $10,000 for his security system and was glad it worked.

"The stuff we put in place, alarms, cameras, plate glass, it worked," Peturcelli said. "We didn't spare any expense, it's the best there is."

The man who threw the cinder block was injured. He apparently cut his hand or arm on the broken glass because blood was found outside of the store.

"Personally, I think they were drunk or they should get mental help. It doesn't make any sense," said Petruccelli. "They achieved nothing. It could cause them a lot of time and aggravation in jail for no apparent reason."

Police would like you to contact them if you recognize either suspect. Just call Broward Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS.
