Police Search For Norland High Shooter
MIAMI GARDENS (CBS4) – As students arrived at Miami Norland Senior High on Wednesday morning for classes, the buzz was about a Tuesday's shooting on the school's sports fields.
"It don't make any sense for students to be fighting and having guns," said Haneef James.
"I really don't see how they're able to carry guns to school," said parent Anthony Clarke, "(They) get in a fight and fire guns, it's scary.'
The shooting occurred at the school, located at 1050 Northwest 195th Street, around 3:40 p.m. Witnesses said a several students were arguing when someone pulled a gun and started shooting.
Students said 17-year old Nekio "Stick" Delancy was shot in the buttocks. He was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital where he is recovering.
Anthony Viscomi told police he was coming home from work when he heard the shots. He added that he got a good look at the shooter when he ran past him.
"All I heard was four gun shots, boom, boom, boom and he took off running down the street and I called Miami Gardens Police," said Viscomi who ran after the suspect. "I took after the gunman and police told me not to chase him. He was just a normal, stocky kid...in his 20s."
James Marshall, an 11th grader, said he heard Delancy had been involved in an argument when the shooting happened.
"It was just a little argument or something and then it just got out of hand," said Marshall.
Concerned parents and relatives of students at Miami Norland Senior High said something needs to be done.
"The shootings need to stop," said Marion Cooney. "The guns and stuff like that in this neighborhood needs to stop. It is kids killing kids now."
"Every parent has a heavy heart when something like this happens because it could be your child, anybody's child," said Hariett Anderson.
Police have not said how many teens were involved in the argument or what may have led up to it.
