Miami Police Arrest Man For Bus Stop Shooting
MIAMI (CBS4) – Police have arrested Joshua McGriff,21, and charged him with first degree murder for the death of a Miami father shot at a bus stop Wednesday night.
36-year-old Juan Augustine Lorenzo-Gonzalez died at the scene near Northwest 15th Avenue and Northwest 36th Street around 5:30 p.m., Wednesday.
Thursday, McGriff's mother told police he gave her a handgun used in the shooting then left the home to go to Jackson Memorial Hospital to commit himself.
Police arrested McGriff at JMH Thursday afternoon on an unrelated charge but police were able to determine the clothing McGriff was wearing matched a description given by witnesses from Wednesday's shooting.
A witness reportedly also followed McGriff after the shooting and gave an accurate description of where he went and what he was wearing.
McGriff was also charged with use of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.
CBS4 obtained surveillance tape from a business near the scene that showed a man wearing a white shirt skipping away on Northwest 15th Avenue.
Gonzalez was shot in the head according to detectives. His family said he was a father of three children.
He was waiting for a bus and sitting on a bench with a couple of grocery bags when the killer approached him and fired two or three shots, according to one witness who did not want to be identified.
"He shot at him twice or three times but the gun never worked again," said the witness. He also said several people were nearby but no one ran to help Lorenzo-Gonzalez.
"Nobody cares about nobody today," he said.
Lorenzo-Gonzalez staggered in to the middle of Northwest 36th Street and collapsed.
"I don't know why they did this," said Rafael Duran. The victim's friend told CBS4's Peter D'Oench, "He was very nice. He didn't bother anybody. I don't feel good. Why did they do that to him? It's not fair."
"Every day it gets worse and worse," said Joaquin Andreu, who along with his family has operated World Appliance of Miami for more than 40 years on the corner of Northwest 15th Avenue and Northwest 36th Street.
