Police: Pizza Delivery Man Shot While Making Delivery
SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE (CBSMiami) – A pizza delivery driver is recovering after Miami-Dade police said he was shot while making a delivery.
Gustavo Gutierrez-Escoria, 59, went to the area of SW 200 Street and SW 123 Drive around 1:00 a.m. Sunday morning, police said.
When he arrived, Gutierrez-Escoria said no one answered the door and he called a contact number. The person who answered the call reportedly told him to wait as cash was retrieved from a nearby ATM.
Police said a car pulled up and Gutierrez-Escoria got out of his delivery car to deliver the pizza. That's when police explained two armed masked males demanded Gutierrez-Escoria's money and emptied his pockets.
As Gutierrez-Escoria attempted to flee, police said the subjects started shooting and hit Gutierrez-Escoria's vehicle several times. Gutierrez-Escoria was also hit and managed to drive to his work office. He called his daughter-in-law for help.
"He told me they've assaulted me I'm at work and they shot me I need someone to come now," Laura Quevedo told CBS4's Maggie Newland.
"I was scared. I didn't know how serious the injuries were. I didn't know how many times I didn't know where he got shot. I didn't know if they were chasing him I didn't know who had done it I didn't know anything," she continued.
Family members found Gutierrez-Escoria at the Pizza Hut. From there a helicopter rushed him to the Kendall Regional Trauma Center where he is in intensive care.
"It's sad to see that people like that are on the street and for nothing. For $50, they're doing that to someone it's stupid," said Quevedo.
She says the whole family had gathered this weekend to celebrate Guttierez-Escoria's son's birthday. He is currently in the military, but came home for the weekend. Instead the family is spending time at the hospital where Guttierez-Escoria is recovering.
"He's talking and he's conscious, but we're still really worried about him. We don't know what's going to happen. We don't have a lot of answers," she said.
She hopes someone will come forward with information. She said her father-in-law is a hard-working man who works two jobs to provide for his family.
"He's always been about work, work, work, to give to everybody else so I'm pretty sure that he's going to continue to get work so hopefully he gets out of this fine."
