Search Intensifies For Gunmen Who Fired At Police In NW Miami-Dade
NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE (CBSMiami) – Police, on Wednesday, handed out flyers asking for help in identifying the gunmen who fired multiple shots at police in northwest Miami-Dade.
Many residents in the area say they're concerned however the violence is not surprising.
Miami-Dade Police went knocking, door after door, handing out flyers about a new illegal gun collection effort, asking residents for their help after gunmen fired several shots at officers Monday in broad daylight while trying to pull a driver over for illegally tinted windows.
"Two of my officers, male and female, tried to stop a silver Cadillac and a silver Infiniti pulled up behind them and started firing shots," said Godyaces Serralta with the MDPD.
"Advising a vehicle, shots fired at RID officers," was recorded on police dispatch.
Police said that while officers were literally dodging nine shots fired at them one of the stray bullets struck this house. You can see it actually shattered one of the front windows—but fortunately nobody was hurt.
"They are shooting here out the window at officers," could be heard over police dispatch recordings.
Argenetta Poellintz, who has lived in her home for 30 years, said she was only slightly surprised gunmen were shooting at police. Her home was hit during the incident.
"Yes I'm surprised, but not too surprised because today young people do anything without regard for anybody," said Poellintz.
Charlie Ford, another resident, expressed similar sentiments.
"No, no I'm not surprised," said Ford. "Cause all of them got guns and you hear them shooting all the time around here. Two people got killed there, they broke in and I think they had a shootout up here the other night,"
Other residents, like Eric Amador, told CBS4's Summer Knowles that the news of the shootout isn't shocking.
"It doesn't really surprise me because at night we are always hearing gunshots," said Amador. " After a while you just get used to, but it's really bad."
The shootings is exactly why police are encouraging residents to get involved because even though nobody was hurt, officers are concerned that may not be the case in the future.
"There could've been two officers dead and again it could've been children or other citizens."
