Police Officer Fired For Offensive Target
PORT CANAVERAL (CBSMiami) – A Port Canaveral police officer was fired after he reportedly brought offensive targets with him to the gun range.
Sergeant Ron King was leading a target practice at the range with two other Port Canaveral officers and a Port employee. Everything was said to be going fine until Sgt. King allegedly pulled out targets that resembled Trayvon Martin, said police.
The targets show a silhouette of a person wearing a hoodie holding a bag of skittles and a drink can. The night Martin died he was wearing a hoodie and carrying a bag of skittles and an iced tea.
Sgt, King asked the group if they wanted to use the targets. They said no and told him to put them back in his patrol car.
"We're offended by this," said John Walsh of Canaveral Port Authority. "We're outraged that one of our officers would have this conduct. It is not tolerable it's not acceptable."
Port Canaveral is about 50 miles Southeast of Sanford where 17-year-old Martin was killed by neighborhood watch volunteers George Zimmerman. Zimmerman said he shot Martin in self defense.
His trial is set for June.
