Police: Mother Left Child In Store After She Shoplifted
DAVIE (CBSMiami) - A Davie woman is facing a grand theft and child neglect charge after allegedly fleeing a Target store with several valuable items. But she left the most valuable one behind: her 6 year old daughter.
According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Dierdre Grant, 40, and her child were seen entering the Target store on 5800 block of South University Drive on Tuesday afternoon. An employee told told police he observed Grant placing several items into Target shopping bags and walked out of the store. Grant was stopped by the employee outside the store and police were called. They allegedly discovered $372.91 worth of items in the bags.
While Grant was stopped outside, her daughter was not with her. The store reviewed surveillance video and discovered that her daughter was left alone in the pet aisle in the back of the store, according to police.
During a court appearance Wednesday, Broward Circuit Court Judge John "Jay" Hurley described how Grant left her daughter in the store.
"You're shaking your head like there's no way that can be true," Hurley said.
Grant was free on bond for a grand theft charge last month and because of her recent arrest, her bond was revoked and she is now in the Broward County Jail .
The Department of Children and Families will appoint a guardian ad litem to represent Grant's daughter
