Police Investigate Deadly Double Shooting In Miami

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - One man is dead, a woman hospitalized, after a double shooting in a Miami apartment early Wednesday morning.

Police were called to the apartment at 302 NW 22nd Street around 3:30 a.m.

While police have not identified the couple their family members told CBS4 Nakia Covington, 37, shot his fiance Kentraniece Lovest Brown before he turned the gun on himself.

"That's the worst phone call I could ever get," said Brown's sister Elisha Lovest Brown. "It's just the worst phone call you can ever get."

Covington and Brown had reportedly been together for eight years and had a three old year son. Brown said she had no idea what led up to Covington lashing out like he did.

"He hit her with the gun, shot her in the leg and then killed himself," said Brown. "I don't know. I don't know. I don't know what made him do that."

The couple's son was inside the apartment at the time of the shooting, according to Brown along with her 11-year old son and Kentraniece's 13-year old daughter. The children were not injured.

"I heard her screaming and by the time I walked in there he was already gone," said Brown. "I panicked a little but I knew how much he loved the kids so I knew he wouldn't do anything to harm them," said Brown. "It's just sad that it had to happen in front of all of the kids. It's just sad."

Brown was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital for her injury. Her sister said that relief doesn't come without regret.

"It shouldn't have ended up like that. It really shouldn't have ended up like that because at the end of the day he was a real good person. I mean a real good person. I'm happy that my sister survived, but we lost somebody that was close to the family like the kids called him Uncle Nap, he was like practically my brother, like I loved him to death," said Brown.
