Police: Driver Kills Man On Scooter, Swaps Seats With Passenger
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4)-A motorist on a scooter suffered a tragic death after he was struck by a van and a tractor trailer early Saturday morning. But police said the driver of the van took off and swapped positions with the passenger before he was caught.
The 27-year-old man was heading north on S.R. 7 at around 2 a.m. when he fell off his scooter and landed on the roadway. A Chevrolet van driving behind the scooter struck the man as he laid on the ground. Then, an oncoming tractor trailer was unable to avoid the man and also struck him.
The driver of the tractor trailer immediately stopped and remained on scene.
But police said the driver of the van, 47-year-old Nicholas Meenan, kept on going and pulled into the parking lot of a nearby McDonalds, then attempted to flee.
An off-duty Fort Lauderdale Police officer stopped the van at SW 16 Street and Fairfax Drive. Police said Meenan had swapped positions with his wife, who was now behind the wheel. The Broward Sheriff's Office DUI Task Force responded and collected samples for toxicology tests.
The victim's name is not being released pending notification of his next of kin.
Meenan is charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
