Police Arrest Pompano Beach Man Who Barricaded Self, Baby

POMPANO BEACH (CBS4)- A four-hour standoff with a man who barricaded himself inside a home in Pompano Beach ended Thursday afternoon, police said.

Broward Sheriff's Office deputies were called to a house on Southwest 8th Street Wednesday afternoon when Andrew Williams, also known as Jeremy Wiggins, 27, pointed a gun at another man.

When deputies entered the house, which was divided into several apartments, they found a 10-month-old boy, crack cocaine and ammunition inside, but Williams wasn't there.

Police returned Thursday morning with an investigator from BSO's Child Protective Investigations Section to determine if the child was safe.

BSO's SWAT team was called to the house around 8:45 a.m. Thursday. Williams was inside with the baby and refused to come out, according to BSO.

BSO Chief Donn Peterson, a SWAT commander, was able to use various tools he found in the back yard of the home to rip a hole in the back wall of the house and gained access into a room where the baby was alone in a bassinette.

Paterson was able to leave the home with the baby without alerting Williams, who was elsewhere in the house, police said.

BSO hostage negotiators spent hours trying to convince Williams to surrender. They deployed gas into the house, and Williams eventually ran out the back door and was arrested.

Williams faces charges of aggravated assault and resisting arrest. He also has a narcotics warrant out of Palm Beach County.

The Department of Children and Families placed the child in emergency custody and a shelter hearing will be held Friday.
