Police Arrest Man In Road Rage, Hit & Run Incidents
NORTHEAST MIAMI-DADE (CBSMiami) - The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a road rage incident, which resulted in several hit and run accidents, including one where the man allegedly pulled a gun on another motorist.
Authorities said the suspect, identified as Edwin Victor Vilchez, and an unidentified female driver got into a heated exchange at the Shell gas station at US 1 and 104th Street. The woman reportedly had children in the car.
A male passerby witnessed the incident and came to the aid of the female driver. That's when, police said, 28-year-old Vilchez pulled out a gun on the man.
The passerby got into his vehicle and drove on to the northbound State Road 826 (Palmetto Expressway). Police said Vilchez followed the passerby onto the highway, and rear ended the man's vehicle on the Palmetto before fleeing the scene.
The passerby then pulled over on the side of 826, just before the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836) and contacted FHP via telephone.
Vilchez's vehicle was spotted by a Miami Dade Police Department unit traveling northbound on the Palmetto.
According to police, Vilchez was seen traveling northbound on the Palmetto at a high rate of speed when he collided with several other vehicles.
The other driver involved was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical but stable condition.
Authorities said Vilchez fled the scene, but was later captured on Okeechobee Road just west of the Palmetto Expressway.
Vilchez was arrested and charged with D.U.I, Hit & Run with Injuries, Resisting Arrest with Violence, Displaying a Firearm and Criminal Mischief.
