Plea Deal Reached In Rolladen Shutters Case
MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – The Broward County state attorney's office has dropped a felony charge of organized fraud against Robert Hoffman, the owner of Rolladen Inc, which makes hurricane shutters.
Hoffman had been arrested in July on the organized fraud charge and a misdemeanor charge of unlicensed contracting.
Hoffman agreed to plead no contest to the charge and will receive one year probation and must comply with the settlement of a civil suit.
In the civil suit settlement, attorney General Pam Bondi's office said Tuesday that roughly 200 consumers received full refunds of the money they paid to Rolladen for shutters that were never provided.
The original lawsuit filed in July 2011 said that Rolladen required consumers to pay 40 to 80 percent of the contract price up-front for the hurricane shutters, promising delivering and installation within six to 12 weeks of the contract date.
Bondi's office said many of those shutters were never delivered.
All total, Bondi's office said that more than $730,000 in refunds were mailed to customers as part of the settlement of the civil suit.
As part of the settlement, Rolladen can continue to manufacture the shutters, but cannot install them from now on.
