Plea Deal For Suspect Involved In Crash With Ft. Laud. Police
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – The man accused of stealing liquor from a South Florida marina then leading police on a chase that landed three police officers on the other side of the law, took a plea in court Monday.
Kenneth Post pleaded guilty to one first degree felony and four third-degree felonies related to the robbery of a liquor cabinet at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina on the 17th Street Causeway on November 22, 2009 and then fleeing.
In exchange for his plea, Post received a sentence of three years with credit for time served. Since he's been in jail for more than two years, he'll be released from jail in the next few months.
Meantime, in another courtroom, the officers involved in that chase are also on trial.
Detective Sgt. Michael Florenco, 35, Detective Matthew Moceri, 29, and Detective Geoffrey Shaffer, 31, are all accused of making up the story of how they crashed their vehicle and are on trial on charges of official misconduct and falsifying records. They have been on unpaid leave since May.
The chase started when police said Post backed into a security guard golf cart as he tried to leave the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina.
The chase ended in the Rio Vista neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale when officers claimed Post rammed their undercover car after a half-mile chase but a reconstruction expert found that the officers had smashed into the back of the Cadillac.
Post was hospitalized after the crash due to his injuries but Post and his family claimed officers beat him up.
