Plantation Police: Small Bomb Explodes Under Unoccupied Car
PLANTATION (CBSMiami) - It's a very bizarre and mysterious case for the Plantation Police Department. Investigators say a small bomb exploded under an unoccupied car in the Tonwhouses of Jacaranda community around 7 pm Wednesday night.
Fortunately no one was in the car and no one was hurt.
Plantation Police, the Broward Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad and investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms responded to the scene and spent hours searching under the car.
Residents say they heard a loud explosion around 7 pm.
"The smoke was all over the street," said Suelyn Guerrero.
People came running. One resident snapped a photo showing an object under the car and a headlight blown out. Investigators spent a lot of time focused on that object. The neighborhood buzzed with rumors of how the bomb might have gotten there.
"There was a guy walking his dog who said that there was a car that went by and threw something under that car over there and drove off," said Kevin Smith.
Police say they're trying to speak to that man. Meanwhile, investigators dusted for fingerprints and searched for clues to solve a bizarre case that is a rare occurrence for police.
"We don't have too many bombs in the city of Plantation," said Police Spokesman Philip Toman. "So yes, this is an unusual case."
