Plantation Police Investigate Attempted Abduction
PLANTATION (CBS4) - Plantation Police are searching for a man they say attempted to abduct a 12-year-old girl last Friday morning.
The attempted abduction happened between 6:40 a.m. and 6:51 a.m. at the intersection of SW 78th Avenue and SW 6th Street, according to police. Police said the girl was waiting for her school bus when she was approached by the driver of a silver, four-door car. The man in the car, who she described as a white male wearing a dark baseball cap, tried to talk to the girl and then asked the girl to get into his car.
"The white male then confronted that juvenile and attempted to engage her in conversation," Det. Robert Rettig of the Plantation Police Department said. "At that point he told her to get into his vehicle."
But the girl ran from the scene to her home and the car drove away. The girl was not harmed during the attempted abduction, police said.
Plantation resident Jose Diaz, who said he lives in the same building as the girl, said he heard about the alleged abduction from a neighbor.
Neighbors in the area said the incident concerns them, especially for children.
"I just wouldn't expect it in this area," Sejal Shah said. "I don't think I've ever heard of anything happening around here."
Plantation Police are searching for the driver and any possible similarities between similar attempted abductions in other jurisdictions.
"The description of the suspect in this case is limited based on the early morning hours and poor visibility," Rettig said.
Plantation police said they are looking into whether this incident is connected to a similar incident last week in which a man in a four-door car pulled up to a 16-year-old girl at a bust stop on LeJeune Road in Miami and tried to forcer her into his vehicle, CBS4's Evan Bacon reported.
