FORT LAUDERDALE — A man is dead and a suspect is still at large following what police called a domestic shooting in Plantation on Saturday morning.

Plantation Police told CBS News Miami that the incident happened near 7000 W. Sunrise Blvd. at a home in the Apple Creek Community. When officers arrived, they found the man dead and the shooter gone.

Officers had set up a perimeter between West Sunrise Boulevard and Northwest 65th Avenue as they searched for the shooter. The perimeter was broken down later Saturday afternoon.

The family of the man who died told CBS News Miami his name was Clayous Pearl but neighbors knew him as "Paul" and someone always willing to lend a hand. According to his family, he was killed by his own stepson.

Police told CBS News Miami they were not identifying the man killed or his shooter at this time.

"They're just distraught," said neighbor Bill Yarrow.

Yarrow told CBS News Miami that he was there when the incident happened and the manhunt began.

"Another neighbor saw the person run away, get into an accident with Paul's vehicle up here and then flee," he said. "Later in the day, I had SWAT in my backyard."

By sky and ground, Plantation Police and the Broward County Sheriff's Office had blocked off the area in hopes of finding the shooter. A black Mercedes SUV sat empty in the neighborhood but no suspect was found.

By Sunday evening, crime scene investigators and the medical examiner showed up to continue the investigation. Shortly after they arrived, a body was pulled from the home as family members watched in agony.

Peart's neighbors told CBS News Miami that this was a great loss to their tight-knit community.

"I knew him as 'Rasta Man Paul' — just a nice guy," Yarrow said. "I was just over at the unit over here. The lady works for Home Depot [and] she would see Paul there every morning, buying supplies. The easiest, nicest, most mellow guy that you could meet."

CBS News Miami spoke with Peart's family, but they did not want to be on camera. They said his wife was home at the time of the shooting.

Plantation Police told CBS News Miami that the shooting was an isolated incident and there are no concerns for public safety at this time.

No arrests have been made as police continue their investigation.
