Pizza Delivery Man Shot During Delivery Recovering
SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE (CBSMiami) - The family of a pizza delivery driver shot while delivering pizza over the weekend said he is recovering.
"He's a great father, a great grandfather he's a hard-working man, works seven days a week," said Silvia Gutierrez, the victim's daughter.
Early Sunday morning, just before Gustavo Gutierrez was supposed to get home from his job as a Pizza Hut Delivery driver, his family received an alarming call.
"I couldn't believe he was telling me 'I'm shot I'm bleeding out call 911, I need help'," Gutierrez's daughter told CBS4's Maggie Newland.
Gutierrez's whole family was gathered for a celebration. His son Humberto, who's in the military, came home on leave to celebrate his birthday and his baby on the way. The celebration abruptly stopped.
Humberto Gutierrez's son said, "everything just dropped and we left."
Police said Gutierrez was shot after he was called to an apartment complex to deliver a pizza. Police believe he was set up. Neighbors said the apartment where he was supposed to deliver the pizza is vacant.
"Nobody's living right now, it's empty," said Mario Figueroa, who lives nearby.
When Gutierrez called the person who ordered, police said he was asked to wait a few minutes. His son said drove out to the street.
"When he hung up the phone he turned around. He saw two masked guys running toward him and told him, 'Don't move,' but as soon as they said, 'Don't move,' they shot at him," said Humberto Gutierrez. "The first one grazed him by his shoulder and then he managed to go around to the driver's side get in the car."
"He was sitting in the driver's seat, and the man he continued shooting at him," said Silvia Gutierrez.
"They shot him a couple more times," added Humberto Gutierrez. "That's when they struck him in the belly and by the groin area."
Despite his injuries, Gutierrez managed to drive back to the Pizza Hut for help. A helicopter rushed him to the hospital. Police said the masked men stole money from his pockets.
"What were you going to take? At most 100 bucks from a person who has kids and nephews and nieces and his grandkids. He has like five grandkids and they're just going to take everything away from us for 100 bucks," said Humberto Gutierrez.
Family members said Gutierrez is just a hard-working man trying to provide for his family and they're asking anyone with information to come forward.
"He'll give you the clothes off his back. He'll give anything to anyone, not just family - anyone in the streets he just, he didn't deserve it," said Silvia Gutierrez.
Gutierrez is out of intensive care but remains in the hospital.
