Piece Of Metal Crashes Through Windshield Of SUV
DANIA BEACH (CBSMiami) - The driver of a Range Rover on I-95 Tuesday morning got quite the scare when a metal rod came crashing through the windshield.
Sateena Spates, 31, was heading on I-95 when a vehicle hit some debris in the road south of Griffin Road. A large metal rod flew up in the air and pierced the windshield between the driver and passenger seats. Neither Spates nor her passenger Carlton Francis Jr., 29, were seriously hurt.
FHP and the Florida Department of Transportation both responded to the incident.
"It looks like the metal rails from a pick-up bed cover, but I'm not 110 percent certain," said FHP Sgt. Mark Wysocky.
From the air Chopper 4 spotted the metal rod pierced windshield - part of it ended up wedged between the dashboard and the windshield.
Spates and Francis, both from Weston, were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital where they were treated for glass fragments and released.
"They're extremely lucky that it didn't come straight at them with enough of an angle that it came across the front of the windshield," said Sgt. Wysocky.
Tuesday's incident brought back memories of an incident 14 years ago when teenager Stephanie Murray was impaled while riding in a van with her mother. She was hit by a three-feet long 17-pound rod that came through the windshield and missed her heart by a half an inch.
Wysocky said the piece in Tuesday's incident was larger than other pieces of road debris that have hit other cars.
