Philbin Mum On Starting Quarterback Battle
DAVIE (CBSMiami) – While the media has had an almost laser-like focus on the Chad Johnson incident, Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin also has a huge decision hanging over his head on who will be the team's starting quarterback.
The odds-on favorite through the first few weeks of training camp was believed to be veteran David Garrard. But, Garrard had to undergo surgery on Saturday and is out for the next 2-4 weeks meaning he may not factor into the starting quarterback decision.
Behind Garrard on the depth chart is last year's starting quarterback Matt Moore and rookie first-round draft pick Ryan Tannehill. Moore played well down the stretch last season and helped the Dolphins win six games.
Tannehill is the team's future at the position and fans are clamoring to see the future of the team take hold of the starting quarterback job, which so far hasn't happened.
Head coach Joe Philbin hasn't tipped his hand on which quarterback is leading the race, but a lot will be known after the next two preseason games.
"We'll see," Philbin said. "We're going to let the practices play out. We're not in a hurry to name anyone anything. I think we're going to start the guy on September 9th, the guy who gives us the best chance to win that game."
Tannehill was the first Dolphins quarterback selected in the first round of the NFL Draft since Dan Marino in 1983.
