Sources say the occupants were terrorized for three hours before the men left. One of the people who said he felt terrible about what happened was retired police officer Donald Corpening who lives next door and was unable to help them.
"Terrible, terrible. Wish I was, there but I wasn't," said Corpening who said he didn't hear the glass being smashed. "That's like my family there. Those are the first people I met when I moved here. Their kids is like my kids."
A man who showed up to watch as police went about their investigation said his ex-wife lived in the home along with two adult daughters, an adult son and a 13 month old grandson. He said his daughter, Kerlande Mateyer, was in the home with her 13-month old daughter at the time of the robbery.
Corpening said he's thankful no one was hurt or killed.
"I'm just glad everybody cooperated and that was one of the reasons they were able to stay there that long," said Corpening.
Police believe the robbers took the family's 2006 green Nissan, tag number "586 TEV" as they made their getaway.
The man said the family has lived in the home for the last 19 years.
Police said they are trying to determine if the family was targeted or just picked at random.
Corpening is adamant these criminals just picked the wrong house.
"Typical American family. They've got jobs. They take care of family, each other, whatever. Nothing to bring them out into a situation where'd you'd even think something like this would happen."
