PD: Arrest Imminent In UM Student Hit & Run Death
CORAL GABLES (CBS4) - An arrest is imminent in the case of a hit and run accident in Coral Gables that left a University of Miami student dead.
According to police spokeswoman officer Kelly Denham, crash investigators have positively identified and obtained a statement from Valentina Andrews Hubsch, the driver of the hit and vehicle that struck and killed 21-year-old Jared Jones on Saturday, November 13th, 2010.
Police have already confiscated the vehicle and collected DNA samples, according to Denham. The Coral Gables Police will now work with the State Attorney's Office to formalize the case and impending arrest.
Jones, of Maryland, died Tuesday Nov. 23, more than a week after the accident. He had been in a coma with massive head and other injuries ever since he was struck by a car walking along Red Road. The driver just kept going.
On hearing of Jones' death, UM issued the following statement:
The entire University of Miami community is saddened to learn today of the death of student Jared "Paul" Jones, 21, a junior majoring in English and originally from Glen Arms, Maryland, as a result of injuries suffered in a car accident off campus over a week ago. Faculty described him as "charming, engaging, warm and funny. He certainly loved his life," said Dr. Thomas Goodman, associate professor of English at UM College of Arts & Sciences, one of his teachers. The University extends its condolences to his family and many friends.
