Parents Fight To Keep Kids After Toddler Falls Out Of Moving Car
HALLANDALE (CBSMiami) – A man, accused of bailing out of a moving car leaving his 2-year-old on the side of a road, was in court with the mother of the child, fighting to keep custody of their five children.
Roland Delancy, 25, was with his girlfriend, Jasmine Simmons, and their toddler in a car when the couple reportedly got into an argument around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. According to the arrest report, Delancy's son was sitting on his lap in the front passenger seat—without a seatbelt.
When Delancy went to snatch a cell phone out of his girlfriend's hand, she swerved and slowed down. That's when Delancy decided he'd had enough.
"He intentionally jumped out of the car. The child fell to the roadway in the middle of traffic, lunchtime on Hallandale Beach Boulevard," said Broward Sheriff's spokeswoman Dani Moschella. "This is could have been a really bad situation."
Police released the 9-1-1 calls that came in from witnesses on Hallandale Boulevard.
"They were driving with the door open and they threw a little baby out on the road," the caller said.
The caller said the man kept walking while a woman from the car grabbed the child.
"Then the mother, or whoever, got out of the car and finally picked the baby up and the man just kept on walking."
The judge ruled that the children would be taken out of the home and will try to have Department of Children and Families.
During his bond hearing Thursday, Delancy told the judge he didn't run off.

"They say that I ran, I had no reason to run. I had a argument with my girlfriend so I decided to exit the vehicle, to remove myself from the situation," said Delancy.
Delancy is charged with child neglect and resisting arrest. He and Simmons will be back in family court on September 16. For the time being, the couple's children will stay with relatives. They'll be allowed supervised visits.
