Panthers Trim 14 Players Off Training Camp Roster
SUNRISE (CBSMiami) – As the Florida Panthers continue marching towards the regular season opener on October 9th, general manager Dale Tallon and head coach Gerard Gallant are evaluating every player working towards a full time job with the club.
On Sunday the team announced that several players had been assigned to the San Antonio Rampage, the Panthers AHL affiliate.
The players sent down were as follows: forwards Connor Brickley, Steven Hodges, John McFarland, Brett Olson and Logan Shaw; defensemen Josh McFadden, Jonathan Racine and Shayne Taker; goaltenders Sam Brittain and Michael Houser. They will all head to San Antonio and participate in the Rampage's training camp.
Additionally, forward Joe Basaraba and defenseman Joshua Brown were released from the Panthers camp but received invitations to participate in San Antonio's training camp.
The Panthers also placed veteran goalie Dan Ellis and defenseman Greg Zanon on waivers. Once they clear waivers the pair will join the rest of the players assigned to Rampage camp, which opens on Monday.
Ellis was brought to the Panthers last season to back up Roberto Luongo but played poorly when called upon. That led to Florida signing free agent goalie Al Montoya who will start the new season as Luongo's backup.
All these moves have trimmed the Panthers training camp roister down from 49 to 35.
The Panthers will go for their first win of the preseason Monday night when they visit the Dallas Stars.
