Panthers Get Declawed By Islanders, 5-1
UNIONDALE, New York (CBS4) - The New York Islanders may be one of the worst teams in the NHL, but one way to cure that is to schedule a game against the Florida Panthers.
The Islanders' Matt Moulson scored three goals for the second straight game and Islanders goalie Al Montoya stopped 20 shots on the way to a 5-1 demolition over the Panthers Monday afternoon.
Moulson started the scoring at 7:40 in the first period and added a second goal later in the period. The Islanders outshot Florida 16-3 in the first period. Moulson's final goal came with 2:37 left in the game on an empty net.
Montoya has been quite a find for the Islanders, who have used six goalies this season because of injuries. On Saturday, he became the first Islander to post a shutout in his first start when New York topped Los Angeles 3-0.
Florida is currently tied with the Toronto Maple Leafs for 11th place in the NHL's Eastern Conference and dead last in the Southeastern Division.
They're currently 7 points behind the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The team is also two games below .500 this season.
