SUNRISE (CBSMiami) – The 2016 NHL Draft is coming up on Friday but the Florida Panthers aren't waiting until then to start making moves.
On Monday the Panthers acquired the rights to pending unrestricted free agent defenseman Keith Yandle from the New York Rangers.
Yandle is 29 years old and is coming off a 47 point season (5g 42a) with New York.
22 of those points came on the power play, an area that the Panthers are in need of help after finishing 23rd in the NHL last season and 24th the year before.
In exchange Florida sent a 6th round pick and a conditional 4th round pick to the Rangers.
Yandle is set to become a free agent on July 1st but the Panthers will try to sign him to new deal before then. If they are successful, the conditional pick will kick in for New York.
The 6-foot-1 , 196-pound defenseman has racked up 65 goals and 246 assists during his 10-year NHL career.
