Palmetto Bay Elects New Mayor & Council Member
PALMETTO BAY (CBS4) ― Palmetto Bay finally has a new mayor and it's Shelley Stanczyk who won Tuesday's run-off election in an extremely tight race.
Stanczyk, a former Village Council member, is only the second mayor in Palmetto Bay's eight-year history. She beat retired business executive Peter England by only 81 votes.
There are 15,412 registered voters in Palmetto Bay but only 4,569 people, or 29-percent of the registered voters, actually cast a ballot in the run-off election, according to the Miami-Dade County Elections Department web site.
Stanczyk received 2,316 votes, or 50.89% and England received 2,235 votes, or 49.11%.
In the race for the District 1 council seat, Patrick Fiore, a manager for the Florida Department of Children & Families, defeated Bev Gerald, a retired office manager, also by a small margin, just 81 votes as well.
Fiore received 2,298 votes, or 50.90% compared to Gerald's 2,217 votes, or 49.10%.
The District 3 council member was elected Nov. 2, when Joan Lindsay, a retired math teacher, won against John DuBois, a local businessman.
All of the newly chosen candidates will be sworn in at the regular council meeting on Thursday Nov. 18.
