Palm Beach County Man Heads To Jail For 1999 Killing
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBSMiami/AP) — A Palm Beach County man who avoided capture for more than a decade will be going to jail for manslaughter.
Antonio Hernandez-Cruz was captured in Oklahoma in 2011, two years after Palm Beach County authorities reopened the case. He pleaded guilty Monday and was sentenced to 12 years in state prison.
The victim was 30-year-old Roberto Arenas, who was killed outside a club in March 1999. A witness identified Hernandez-Cruz as the shooter of Arenas. Arenas' DNA was also found on a shirt Hernandez-Cruz was wearing.
The night of the killing, Hernandez-Cruz himself was treated at a local hospital for what turned out to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He told authorities then that he was attacked and robbed.
