OSHA Issues $38K Penalties In Miami Garage Collapse
MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Six months after a fatal garage collapse at Miami Dade Community College's west campus, the U.S. Department of Labor is weighing in on who may be at fault.
Four people died and several were injured in the collapse after beings trapped beneath the rubble.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited five companies for serious safety violations and fined them thousands of dollars for failing to properly build and inspect the structure.
Victims who survived remember it like it was yesterday.
"I just heard a collapse and the building fall and being stuck under the rubble praying," is what Christian Ramirez said he last remembered.
Ramirez suffered numerous injuries, including multiple bone fractures and brain damage.
"It was a hell of a full loaf of negligence baked to perfection and served to these people," said Stuart Z. Grossman, one of Ramirez's attorneys.
OSHA seemingly agrees.
"They were putting up too many columns per day too fast trying to get to a deadline and as a result things weren't being aligned properly or grouted properly or welded properly," said another one of Ramirez's attorneys, Alan Goldfarb.
OSHA's final report is expected to be complete by the end of April.
