Orlando Nearing Deal To Land MLS Franchise
ORLANDO (CBSMiami/AP) — While Miami continues to wait for soccer legend David Beckham to make a final decision about putting a soccer franchise in South Florida; Orlando is moving ahead trying to land a Major League Soccer team of its own.
Orlando's board of commissioners voted to approve a plan to fund a new downtown stadium on Monday. The plan approves $20 million in tourism taxes for the stadium.
The remaining money for the stadium expected to cost $84 million would come from the USL Pro League's Orlando City Soccer Club.
The plan now moves to the Orange County Commission in a vote scheduled for October 22nd.
While Orlando's current soccer team plays in the outdated Citrus Bowl, MLS officials said a new team would need a soccer-specific stadium.
