Oregon & K-State Jump To Top In Polls
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – After Texas A&M sprung the improbable upset of Alabama Saturday, the top of the college football rankings were going to undergo some change. The AP released its rankings Sunday and the Oregon Ducks is the new number one team in the nation.
Unless you go by the Bowl Championship Series standings, in which case the Kansas State Wildcats have ascended to the top spot in the nation.
The AP ranked Oregon first, followed by: Kansas State, Notre Dame, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State (ineligible for post-season play), Florida, LSU, Texas A&M, and Florida State. The SEC claimed half of the top ten in the AP rankings.
The BCS ranked Kansas State one followed by: Oregon, Notre Dame, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Texas A&M, South Carolina, Florida State. The SEC has six of the top 10 spots in this week's BCS rankings.
But, based on the current rankings, if Kansas State, Oregon, and Notre Dame finish their seasons undefeated; then Oregon and Kansas State will likely play for the BCS National Championship. That would end the SEC's streak of six consecutive BCS national champions.
Oregon has the toughest schedule of the three remaining undefeated teams with games against #13 Stanford and #16 Oregon State. Kansas State has two games left against Baylor and #15 Texas. Notre Dame has two games left against a woeful Wake Forest team and against #18 USC to finish the year.
If any of the undefeated teams slip up, it opens the door for the SEC to once again leap up into the National Championship game.
