Orange Bowl Selected For 2015 Semifinal Game
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – While the future of the Super Bowl in South Florida remains in doubt; Sun Life Stadium will play a major role in the 2015 college football national championship picture.
The Orange Bowl will host one of the semifinals matchups at the end of the 2015 season at Sun Life Stadium. College football will enact a four-team playoff format for the 2014 season and thereafter. The Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl will be the host of the playoffs in 2014.
In addition to the Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl, and Rose Bowl, the championship committee opened the bidding process to all 31 current bowls.
"This is about giving as many fans as possible the opportunity to enjoy the new playoff and the other bowls in person," said Bill Hancock, Executive Director of the BCS and the future playoff. "A rotating event means more fans in more places will be able to experience the excitement of the new playoff. Because of the criteria, we don't expect every bowl to proceed with a bid, but we want to extend an offer to all that are part of the college football bowl tradition."
The championship committee said the bidding process would be similar to how the location for the Final Four is set every year.
The committee running the playoff still has a few elements of the playoff system still to resolved including:
- Creating a selection committee
- Selecting the host of the first national championship game
- Choosing the bowl which will be involved in the new playoff system
- And naming the overall event
