Watch In Effect For Bermuda As Hurricane Ophelia Churns In Atlantic

MIAMI (CBS4) –Hurricane Ophelia is is gaining strength in the Atlantic.

At 11 p.m. Thursday, the center of the system was about 735 miles south-southeast of  Bermuda. Maximum sustained winds were 85 mph with some higher gusts.

The storm was moving to the north-northwest near 9 mph. A turn to the north and an increase in speed is expected Friday.

The National Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm watch for the island of Bermuda.

Ophelia has already caused flooding and cut off communities on Dominica.

About 1,600 people were stranded on the island and nearly a dozen cars have washed away.

Currently there are no watches or warnings posted for this storm.
