Open Your Heart To A Furry New Pal On Valentine's Day
MIAMI (CBS4) - Valentine's Day conjures up images of flowers and candy for most people. For three year old Milani Villana, however, it conjures up images of a new puppy she really, really wants.
"Something small, not too big, something that's good with kids," said Jamie Villana as she explained what they were looking for to CBS4's Cristina Puig.
Mitch Weinstein was also in the market for a new four legged friend.
"Probably a female dog, they're a little better, a little cleaner," said Weinstein, "Not to disrespect male dogs, of course."
As part of a Valentine's Day promotion, pet lovers were able to adopt a dog or a cat in need of a good home for only $75 during the Broward County Animal Care services "Adopt-A-Sweetheart" program.
"Part of the reason we do it is to bring the love of animals to people here in the community," said Lisa Mendheim, the department's public education coordinator.
Miami-Dade's Animal Services department offers a similar pet adoption program which includes a health exam along with spay, neutering and vaccinations.
"Valentine's Day is the holiday of love so we want somebody to come here and fall in love with one of our shelter pets," said Dr. Sara Pizano, director of Miami-Dade's Animal Services.
"I've adopted a dog on Valentine's Day and a cat on Valentine's Day," said Pam Shorey.
If you're looking for a gift for that special someone, you can also purchase an adoption gift certificate which is good for up to a year.
