72-Year Old Guard Injured In Armored Truck Robbery
MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Federal authorities are investigating an armored truck robbery which occurred in Miami on Friday leaving one person injured.
FBI officials are currently at the scene investigating the robbery which occurred at 2905 NW 27th Avenue.
Authorities said between 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., a Brinks crew comprised of two people were leaving with money from a Check Cashing USA store.
One of the guards from the armored truck came out with a bag and a young Hispanic man walked up pushed and shot the 72-year old guard, Andres Perez of Southwest Miami-Dade in the leg then took the bag of money.
Perez was treated at the hospital and released.
The robber ran away and has not been found.
The other guard was unharmed.
Nearby grocery store owner, Jose Calleja heard the shot and came running outside.
He told CBS4's Natalia Zea in Spanish, "I saw the guard against the wall, I ran over and asked what happened? 'He said, he shot me.'"
Calleja says the attack makes him nervous, especially because the attack was so close to the store.
He told Zea, Perez delivers money to the check cashing store twice a week and is a very good guy who didn't deserve an attack like this.
The FBI said inside the bag of money was a tracking device. After moving for a short time the device only tracked in one particular area. It's not known whether the robber discovered the device or whether it malfunctioned.
The robber is described as a male with a dark complexion, between the ages of 18 and 20. He's between 5-6 and 5-8, 130 to 140 pounds, has a full close shaven beard, and was last seen wearing a black shirt and blue jeans. If you recognize him call the FBI at 305-944-9101.
The FBI is offering a five thousand dollar reward and Brinks is putting up an additional $20,000 dollar reward if there is an arrest in the next ten days.
