One Dead In Allapattah Police-Involved Shooting

ALLAPATTAH (CBS4) - Miami-Dade Police Director James Loftus and several officers rushed to the scene of a deadly police-involved shooting late Tuesday night in a Miami neighborhood.

A Miami-Dade Police confirmed to CBS4 an officer working robbery intervention detail began following a car with a stolen tag in the area of 32nd street and Northwest 8th Avenue around 10pm Tuesday.

Loftus told CBS4's Natalia Zea that the officer attempted stop the vehicle.

At some point, police say, the person driving the car leaned out and began firing an automatic rifle at the officer.

The officer and the suspect jumped out of their cars and exchanged gunfire. The suspect was shot.

The injured suspect was transported by Miami Fire Rescue to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

The officer was not injured in the melee.

Director Loftus spoke about the dangers police officers face everyday.

He said, according to witnesses, his officer "is lucky to be alive."

Police say the officer was driving in an unmarked car with police lights.

Loftus told CBS4's Natalia Zea,  "there is no reason to believe the suspect did not know it was an officer."
