One Hurt In Miami Police-Involved Shooting
MIAMI (CBS4) - One man is in critical condition after a police-involved shooting in this city---the third one this year.
Miami Police are still trying to piece together what happened. Police spokeswoman Kenia Reyes told CBS4's Peter D'Oench that the shooting happened outside a dollar store on Flagler St. at 15th Avenue just after 6 p.m.
"An officer was flagged down in reference to a dispute that was happening between several people and what we do know is that shots were fired and one person was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition," said Reyes. She could not say if the man who was wounded had fired a gun at the officer.
"That officer is being questioned right now and we don't have all the answers yet," said Reyes. "I will say if anyone who lives in the area saw anything, we want them to call the police."
It's not known if any surveillance cameras in the area captured what happened, but police are looking for surveillance tape. Police could not confirm one report that at least three people were seen running from the scene.
Two men who identified themselves as cousins of the the man who was shot rushed from the crime scene. One cousin told D'Oench, "We can't say anything right now. We can't comment about this."
Witnesses told D'Oench they heard three shots that were fired.
"I definitely heard three shots," said Angel Barselo. "I told my wife those were pistol shots and that's when I hit the ground."
"Three times is what I heard, three shots is what I heard," said witness Reynalso Martinez.
A group of three youngsters were returning to their homes from a nearby library when they heard the three shots and came around a corner and told D'Oench what they heard and saw.
"I heard three shots and then we came around the corner of a building and I saw the cop with a gun pointed at a man who was wounded and he said stay down, stay down, I don't want to shoot you again. And the man who was shot stayed down and kept holding his side. That was something."
"I knew it was a police-involved shooting when I saw at least 10 police cars rushing to the scene," said area resident Tony Marban.
"That was something else," said Marban. "I'd just like some answers as to what happened."
