Miami Water Main Break Floods Streets, Homes
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – As if Sunday's soaking rains weren't enough to deal with, residents of one Miami neighborhood had to deal with flooding from a water line break.
Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Ignatius Carroll said a 36 inch water main near NE 76th Street and 3rd Place burst Sunday afternoon around 1 p.m., sending thousands of gallons of water in the surrounding streets. The water came up to the wheel line of several cars, flooding them.
Lt. Carroll said at least one home had to be evacuated due to the rising water.
"My mom and my dad built the house," said Terrence Pierre, "And he just passed."
Pierre said he heard a boom and then looked outside to see the water flowing.
Crews had it under control in hours; at one point they had to dig up part of street.
Several residents of the area will have to find a temporarily place to stay.
"I'll have to some play else to go sleep tonight because I'm afraid to stay in the house," said Belgerie Raymonvil.
"It (the water) is so high, I can't tell, we can't live there no more," said Ferande Francois.
The broken main is located under three tractor trailers which are parked on a hard packed lot. The flowing softened the earth and caused one of the trailers to sink. Crews may have to use a crane to move the trailers so they can get to the broken main.
