MIAMI (CBSMiami) – One person is dead following a multi-vehicle crash on I-95.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, a wrong-way driver was traveling northbound in the southbound express lanes on I-95 when he struck four other vehicles.

Traffic cameras show debris scattered all over the southbound lanes of I-95 at 103rd Street.

It's there a deadly wrong-way drive came to a crashing end.

Troopers spotted a man driving a Kia SUV the wrong way in the express lanes.

"Several of our troopers patrolling the area observed the vehicle driving at a high rate of speed in a reckless manner," said Lt. Alex Camacho with Florida Highway Patrol. "Troopers also radioed it in to our dispatch center and attempted to overtake that vehicle to stop him."

Investigators say before they could stop the driver he hit several cars.

"The vehicle collided, multiple collisions, with several vehicles," Camacho said. "One of them being a head on collision. The victim of that head on collision was unfortunately confirmed deceased on the scene."

Troopers escorted the driver of the SUV, who's accused of causing the wreck, to Ryder Trauma Center.

He's in stable condition, possibly with a broken arm.

Investigators tell us the person who died is a man, but they're not releasing anything else.

They're still trying to figure out how the driver of the SUV ended up going the wrong way.

"This is a tragic scene," said Camacho. "Somebody lost their life and they were just commuting the way [they were supposed to] and they were struck by somebody going the wrong way."
