Deadly Alligator Alley Crash
WESTERN BROWARD (CBS4) – One person was killed, two others injured in a pre-dawn accident on Alligator Alley.
Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Mark Wysocky said the accident happened around 2:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-75 near Mile Marker 31. Nineteen year old Bartley Gorman, who was driving a red Dodge pick up truck, rear-ended a Toyota 4Runner being driven by 51-year old Harry Dontfraid from North Ft. Myers.
On impact Dontfraid lost control, went off the road and plunged into a canal.
"The two occupants of the vehicle that went into the canal were both able to get out of the vehicle however one was able to get to the bank, but the second wasn't able to and drown," said Wysocky.
According to Dontfraid, his passenger did not know how to swim.
Dontfraid and Gorman, who is from Auburndale, were taken to the Cleveland Clinic in Weston to be treated for their injuries.
The FHP has not released the name of Dontfraid's passenger. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
"We'll get some blood drawn to see if alcohol was involved, we'll see if somebody may have fallen asleep," said Wysocky, "That will all be part of our investigation."
