One Dead, Suspect In Custody After Shooting In Plantation
PLANTATION (CBS4) - Plantation Police are investigating a deadly shooting at the Harbor Town Apartment Homes Tuesday night.
Authorities said late Tuesday they had a gunman in custody after an extensive search that revealed he was closer than they ever suspected.
After a nearly 3-hour manhunt, police discovered the alleged gunman in an apartment directly next to the parking lot where the victim was shot.
"It appears that a white male was attempting to kill himself by unknown means. We don't know that yet," Plantation Police Det. Phil Toman said. "He was positively IDed as the shooter."
A distraught woman made that discovery inside a home just feet from where officers with K9s had been searching for the gunman for much of the evening.
"(She) came out of the apartment when she saw him laying on the floor and that's when we went inside," Det. Toman said.
The 31-year-died victim died at the hospital.
A motive for the shooting is unknown.
The scene outside the Harbor Town community was almost as busy as the one inside.
Residents just out of work waited to get to their homes, anxious to find out what happened in their usually quiet complex.
"You think of this area as more family oriented," neighbor TK Kelley said. "You wouldn't see this usually I wouldn't think."
Resident Jordan Hartmann agreed. "I thought this was a nice safe place," she said.
Eventually, police let everyone back inside, even as they thought the killer was still on the loose.
Police said they did knock on doors, but no one answered at the unit where they found the suspect.
They say he was groggy when they found him upstairs.
The identities of the victim and the suspect have not yet been released.
