One Dead, One In Custody After Shooting Near Ft. Lauderdale
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – A suspected killer is in custody after a deadly shooting near Ft. Lauderdale Sunday evening.
Around 8:30 p.m., a gunman opened fire on a crowd of people gathered outside a home in the 2000 block of SW 50th Avenue.
As the crowd dove for cover, one person was hit. He was taken to Broward Health Medical Center where he died.
"When I heard, 'Oh my God, somebody killed' or somebody killed somebody. I heard the gun but I don't know what happened," said neighbor, Demaris Marenco.
Witnesses told Broward Sheriff's investigators that the gunman drove off after the shooting.
A deputy racing to the scene spotted a vehicle which matched the gunman's getaway vehicle a couple of miles away in Plantation and stopped it, according to sheriff's office spokesman Mike Jachles.
The suspected shooter bailed out of the car and took off on foot but was caught by K-9. He was taken into custody and then taken to the hospital.
The sheriff's office has not released the name of the person who died.
