Ohio Man Dies In Scuba Incident Off Key Largo
Key Largo (CBSMiami) – The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is awaiting autopsy results after an Ohio man died while diving offshore of Key Largo.
Ronald Dye, 56, was diving from the commercial dive boat Tropical Adventures, operated by Rainbow Reef Dive Center, on Wednesday. The charter group was diving on the Benwood Wreck site, about six miles offshore of Key Largo.
Dye and his dive buddy entered the water at 9:15 a.m. The boat's captain said he saw the pair surface about 25 minutes later and the dive buddy signaled for assistance. A mate on the boat went into the water with a rescue buoy and assisted both men back to the boat.
Dye was unresponsive so the mate started cardio pulmonary resuscitation and the vessel started back for the dock. Dye was taken to Mariner's Hospital by paramedics where he was pronounced dead.
The dive buddy told sheriff's deputies Dye indicated he was low on air, so they surfaced. At that point, he said Dye indicated something was wrong, but didn't tell him what it was.
