Officers In Obama Motorcade Recovering From Accident
MIAMI (CBS4) - For the second time in as many years, the motorcade of President Barack Obama ran into problems while making its way through South Florida.
According to CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald, Sgt. Rufus Devane, III, 42, and Sgt. Santiago Cruz, 49, were injured as the president's motorcade left Miami Beach.
The accident happened near where Interstate 95 meets State Road 836 (Dolphin Expressway) near downtown Miami.
Both Sgts. Devane and Cruz were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Miami Police told the Herald an abandoned car on the shoulder of the road may have played a role in the crash.
Obama's schedule wasn't impacted and he left South Florida to return to Washington ahead of his scheduled departure time Wednesday night.
Last September, a Jupiter Police officer was hit and killed by a pickup truck while the president was in West Palm Beach on a campaign stop.
The White House and U.S. Secret Service had no comment about Wednesday's accident.
