Officer Injured In Downtown Miami Chase
MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A crash involving a Miami Police car sent two people to the hospital Friday afternoon.
Police say the officer involved in the crash was responding to a chase. The chase started downtown just before 4 p.m. according to Miami Police spokesman Officer Rene Pimentel.
Police described the car leading them on a chase as a silver Nissan believed to be involved in an armed robbery earlier in the month.
"One of our units spotted a vehicle that had been involved in an armed robbery. He began chasing that vehicle and another officer heard the call, came to his aid and unfortunately was involved in an accident on the way to that officer," said Pimentel.
Police are still investigating exactly how the accident happened and who is at fault. Witnesses said they saw the police car coming down NW 29th street while a White Sedan was traveling on 12th Avenue.
Maryuri Avila, said she saw the crash. "The officer turned on his lights and then the guy was already speeding so it was too late for him to stop and then there was a collision," she said.
According to Avila, the force of the crash spun the police car around. The car's airbag deployed.
The officer and the driver of the white car were taken to the hospital. Police said both the officer and the driver are stable and expected to be okay.
While a number of police officers worked to investigate the crash, other officers arrived at the hospital with well wishes for their injured colleague.
Police said they lost sight of the car leading them on the chase.
